On November 9, 1959, the Columbus Citizen and the Ohio State Journal merged to form the Columbus Citizen-Journal, a morning paper. With this merger, the Ohio State Journal, which began in 1811 as the Western Intelligencer, suspended publication. The collection consists of 24,006 black-and-white photographs of various sizes and dates ranging from 1912 to 1984, which were either used in the paper itself or for research purposes in the interest of composing a piece. Description: Willard Warner (1826-1906) was born in Granville, Ohio, and served as a officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, leading troops from his native Ohio. After the war he served as a US Senator from Ohio until 1867 when he moved to Alabama and upon its readmission to the Union he served as a US Senator for Alabama (1868-1871). He died in Chattanooga, Tennessee and is buried in Newark, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Isaac R. Sherwood was born in Stanford, New York, on August 13, 1835. He studied law at the Ohio Law College in Poland, Ohio. After finishing school, Sherwood became the editor of the Williams County Gazette in Bryan, Ohio, in 1857. Sherwood resigned from his position as judge and enlisted as a private in the Fourteenth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served throughout the war, ultimately being promoted to lieutenant colonel. After the war, he was elected as Secretary of State of Ohio in 1868 and again in 1870. Sherwood successfully ran for the United States House of Representative in 1872 and served one term. As a Democrat, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1906. Sherwood served for seven straight terms in Congress until he failed to win reelection in 1920. When World War I began, he refused to support the United States declaration of war and refused to vote in favor of the draft. At various points in his life he owned or edited newspapers across the state including the Toledo "Daily Commercial" and "News-Democrat." He died on October 15, 1925 in Toledo. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of a portrait of Samuel Huntington (1765-1817) who was the third governor of Ohio, serving from 1808-1810. Huntington's term as governor was not without controversy. Although he himself was not targeted, the state legislature tried to impeach two other judges for decisions similar to the Rutherford v. M'Fadden case. These impeachment proceedings were ultimately unsuccessful. The two judges, Calvin Pease and George Tod, maintained their positions by a single vote each. The state capital was moved to Zanesville for a time, and there was continued debate over its permanent location. In addition, there was considerable unease about potential military conflict with Great Britain, which ultimately did occur with the War of 1812. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of a portrait of William Allen (1803-1879) who served as Ohio's governor from 1874-1876. As governor, Allen worked to reduce the state government's budget and was able to lower taxes in 1875. Not all of his actions were as popular as his tax cut. Ohio, like other parts of the nation in the 1870s, experienced a number of labor disputes. Allen tended to be more supportive of managers and business owners than of workers, although he still believed that big businesses must respect state laws. If necessary, the governor was willing to call out the state militia to enforce order in labor disputes. His most unpopular measure was his support of the printing of greenbacks. Greenbacks were money without backing in gold or other precious metals, Allen believed they would help alleviate the economic problems that Ohio faced at this time. Description: Photograph of a portrait of Mordecai Bartley (1783-1870) who served as Ohio's eighteenth governor from 1844-1846. He was inaugurated on December 3, 1844. Bartley succeeded his own son, Thomas Bartley, who became Ohio's seventeenth governor upon Wilson Shannon's resignation from the office. Although Mordecai Bartley only served one term as governor, his administration was very active. The Whigs held the majority within the state legislature. As a result of this, they were able to pass the Kelley Bank Bill of 1845, which stabilized the state's banking system. They also reformed the state's taxation policy. Bartley also became known for his position on fugitive slave laws. Bartley not only opposed these laws but also advocated the repeal of Ohio laws that deprived African Americans of basic rights. Bartley was governor when the United States became involved in the U.S.-Mexican War. He personally opposed the war but felt that it was his duty as governor to provide Ohio troops for the war effort. When Governor Wilson Shannon resigned in 1844 to become the United States ambassador to Mexico, Bartley was appointed governor. He served as governor from April 15, to December 3, 1844. Description: Photograph of a portrait of Richard M. Bishop (1812-1893), Ohio's governor from 1878-1880. Bishop's term as governor was relatively uneventful. The state legislature passed the Bland-Allison Act, which allowed for the coinage of silver, as well as passing laws that punished election bribery and blackmail. Democrats were not entirely satisfied with Bishop's administration though, because they believed that his sons had too much influence on political appointments that were made during his terms. As a result, the party chose Thomas Ewing, Jr., instead of Bishop, as its candidate in the 1879 elections. View on Ohio Memory.

Ohio became one of the first states to recognize Labor Day as a state holiday, and the state legislature passed other laws that were beneficial to workers. Description: Photograph of a portrait of Thomas Kirker (1760-1837) who became acting governor in 1807 when Governor Edward Tiffin resigned to become a United State Senator. As governor, Kirker dealt with Ohio citizens' concerns about Native-American threats in western Ohio. He sent Thomas Worthington and Duncan McArthur to Fort Greene Ville in late 1807 to investigate, but the two men found no evidence to support the settlers' concerns. Because of Worthington's and McArthur's report, military conflict with the Native Americans did not materialize during Kirker's administration. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of a portrait of James M. Cox (1870-1957) who served as Ohio's governor from 1913-1915 and from 1917-1921. It was during Cox's first term as governor (1913-1915) that Ohio formally adopted direct primaries, initiative and referendum. Cox's administration oversaw reforms within the state court system, the civil service, and the budget and tax processes. The state passed laws that dealt with municipal home rule, workmen's compensation, educational reform, and prison reform, among numerous other issues. Cox faced new challenges after election to his second term in office. He continued to work for Progressive reforms, but he also had to mobilize Ohio to support the American war effort during World War I. The governor worked particularly hard to keep labor disputes from disrupting war production in the state during the war. View on Ohio Memory.
